Witkoff Heads to Oslo for Ukraine Talks, Eyes Putin Meeting

(MENAFN) US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is set to travel to Norway on Tuesday to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, local media reported Monday.

Citing a US official, the reports said the Oslo talks are expected to include Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, along with representatives of the E4 (Britain, France, Germany and Poland), the European Union and NATO.

The aim, the official said, is to assemble a comprehensive proposal that could serve as the foundation for renewed negotiations with Russia.

Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, spoke with Zelenskyy on Sunday to take stock of progress and map out next steps.

Kushner will join the Oslo discussions remotely, the official said, because he has the flu and is avoiding in-person meetings to keep from spreading it.

After Oslo, Witkoff plans to continue to Russia, where he hopes to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and present ideas shaped in consultation with Ukraine and its European partners, according to the official.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that Moscow places great value on US mediation efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow, he said a final settlement would require a representative from Kyiv who is prepared to take responsibility.

Trump, for his part, suggested the time may have come for someone other than Zelenskyy to negotiate for Kyiv.

“I think it’s time for somebody else to negotiate on behalf of Ukraine because what’s happened? A tremendous number of people are dead. They’re losing their male population,” he told reporters.

“Maybe it’s time for Zelenskyy to get somebody else to negotiate.”
